Corrugated cardboard and corrugated carton were produced in the late 19th century, there was a large quantity of demand in the early 20th century. Corrugated carton is lightweight, inexpensive, can be mass-produced in various sizes and patterns, has a small storage space before using, so it is widely used in the packaging of finished goods, and become a major packaging material. 

The corrugated carton is bonded by a single or multi-wavy corrugated cardboard and flat paper. 

The corrugated carton has a good performance of compression resistance and shock resistance and can withstand a certain pressure, shock and vibration

Raw materials 
Raw paper: namely, raw paper used for producing / manufacturing cardboard (carton) for short, also known as a roll paper or cannon paper. The size of raw paper generally is a minimum of 29"and a maximum of 55", a total of 14 odd width, there are 14 sizes for raw paper to produce cardboard(width along the direction of grooves):29 ", 31", 35 ", 37", 39 "...... 55." 
Special paper size: 58 ", 62", 66 ", 70", 74 ", 78", 82 ", 86", 90 ", 94", 98 "and eleven kinds of paper sizes. 
Writing format: when indicating the size of cardboard, the paper size is written ahead, length of cardboard is written behind, such as 31 "* 84", 29 "* 72" ...... 

Identification of paper 
K Paper: 250g/m2  T paper (white): 200g/m2

Classify according to utility
Glossy paper: kraft paper on the top layer of corrugated board, also known as cardboard paper. 
a. glossy paper (cardboard paper) is generally unbleached kraft paper, kraft is made of fiber composed of softwood sulfate pulp on a long-mesh paper machine. 
b. When making paper, add a layer of bleached pulp on the top surface of unbleached cardboard, so that one side of cardboard paper becomes white, the originally colored cardboard is called mottled white liner, suitable for printing. 
c. Physical indicator of cardboard box is: quantitative (g/m2). 
d. Quantification of cardboard box is generally 127-310g/m2, compared with carton. 

Corrugated medium paper: medium paper and corrugated paper that produce corrugated cardboard. 
a. mainly made of semi chemical pulp (i.e. raw pulp is socked in acid sulfite and soda ash, and then is mechanically ground into pulp) on a long-mesh paper machine. 
b. mainly physical quantitative indicator(g/m2). 
c. quantification of corrugated paper is generally 112-200 g/m2. 
Inner facing: the innermost layer of corrugated cardboard, usually made of paper like outer facing, also known as cardboard paper. 

Classification of corrugated cardboard 
By layers: single pit, twin pit, tri-pit, single corrugated paper, double corrugated paper, single B-Flute, double B-Flute .
In order to increase the overall compression resistance of carton, double pit cardboard use A / B or E / B pit cardboard to improve printing effect. 

Interpretation of corrugated cardboard: in order to reflect the paper and corrugated (pit-type) combination of each kind of cardboard, the interpretation method is as follows: 
Use letters or numbers to represent paper; 
Use 3 and 9 to represent the medium paper and pit type, 3 represents C pit or B pit, 9 represents E pit.. 
Each letter or digit represents a layer of paper (outer facing, corrugated paper, medium paper, bottom paper). 

Structure of cardboard 
Shape of corrugated cardboard, take five-payer cardboard (double-pit cardboard) as an example: i.e., corrugated board is flute shape, a group of corrugated paper is composed of two arcs and a tangent connecting the arcs. Flute shape can be divided into a V-shape, U-shape, and UV-shape. 
V-shape: the arc of V-shaped flute has a smaller radius, having a better compression performance in the early period of increasing pressure, but become weak when exceeding the highest point. So it has poor cushioning performance, strong compression resistance, small adhesive painting facet, not easy to glue. 
U-shape: the arc of U-shaped flute has a big radius and good flexibility, having a big impact energy. After the pressure is eliminated, it still can return to the original shape. So it has a good cushioning performance, weak compression resistance, big adhesive painting facet, easy to glue. 
UV shape: UV-shaped flute is shaped between the U-shaped and V-shaped flutes, the radius of its arc is greater than V-shaped flute, smaller than U-shaped flute, thus has the advantages of both and has a wider application. 

4 National GB6544-86 (corrugated cardboard) requires all flute shapes are UV-shaped, generally A, B, C, D, E-shaped flutes are more commonly used.
A flute: the number of flute is few and the height of flute is high within the unit length, A flute carton is suitable for packaging fragile items, having a greater buffering capacity; such as: broken glass cups, ceramics and other classes. 
B flute: B flute is contrast to A flute, the number of flute is more and the height of flute is low within the unit length, so B flute cardboard is suitable for packaging heavy and hard objects, such as bottles for beverage cans and other packaging items; Furthermore, since B flute cardboard is stiff and difficult to destroy, it can be used for manufacturing complex combination carton. 
C flute: the number and height of C flute within unit length is ranging between A flute and B flute, the performance is similar with A flute, the thickness of cardboard is less than A flute, so the fees of custody and transportation can be saved. European countries and the United States like to use C flute. 

E flute: the number of flute is the most and the height of flute is the lowest within the unit length. With less thickness ad more tough characteristics, corrugated cardboard made of it has a better cushioning properties than ordinary cardboard, and slotted incision is intact and smooth, color printing can be performed. 

Type of corrugated carton 

Slotted carton (02#): It is the most commonly seen packaging carton, made of a piece of corrugated cardboard, then stapled or glued on the seam seal. Top and bottom roll cover constitute carton bottom and lid cover, can be folded flat in the process of transportation, seal the lid cover when being used. Slotted carton can be divided into the regular slotted carton (also known counterpart lid box, RSC) - the outer roll cover is closed in the middle, and the irregular slotted cartons. Irregular slotted cartons can be divided into many categories according to specific situations. 

Sleeve-type carton (03#): consisted of box blanks, featured by a box body with lid (top, bottom), when used, the lid and the box body is socketed. 

Folding carton (04#): usually composed of a corrugated cardboard which is folded into carton bottom, sides and lid, without stapling or gluing. 

Half slotted carton (HSC): only one pair of roll cover, plus a cover. 

Structure type shallow no-cover carton without cover: similar with cap/lid cardboard, the distinction is that structure type shallow no-cover carton has a lower cap which can not cover the lid; and also similar with half slotted cartons, the difference is that the lid of structure type shallow no-cover carton is not slotted, but has four nails of bits, only a layer of carton at the bottom. 

Double-cover three-part combined carton: a carton composed of one cap, one lip and one enclosed barrel.
